Physiological analysis of growth in maize (Zea mays L.) as influenced by cropping systems and nitrogen levels

A field study comprising of four cropping systems and four nitrogen levels was carried out during rainy seasons of 1997 and 1998, to study the effect ofintercropping systems and nitrogen on physiological parame viz. LAI, partitioning of dry matter accum ulation and N AR of maize. G rowing maize in paired row system 90 cm) significantly increased LAI at all the crop growth stages as compared to uniform row distance. Maize intercropped with urdbean and soybean had no singnificant effect on LAI. Increase in the dose of N also led to significant increase in LAI, dry matter accumulation (g plant-1) and NAR at all the crop growth stages Highest LAI was recorded at 60 DAS, whereas the maximum dry matter accumulation (g plantl) was recorded at 90 DAS and NAR at 60-90 DAS.
