Lactobacillus constitute an important component of intestinal flora in chicken and other farm animals. In chicken, the lactobacilli establish within a few days of hatching and form a close association with the epithelial cells. Use of undefined normal chicken gut microflora and defined probiotic preparations in day old chicks for competetive exclusion of eteropathogens especially salmonella is well established. In addition, improvment of growth rate and feed efficency are other areas where stress was laid. Probiotics and competetive exclusion microflora products necessarily work in similar fashion because of many factors inherent to composition of the product, geographical location, feeding practice, management conditions etc. In present intensive poultry management system, large number of synthetics growth promoters and anti-mircobial compounds are being used. Knowledge of the characteristics of autochthonous gut microbes becomes one of the prerequisites before formulating a seed inoculum to use in day old chicks as probiotic. Little information is a available regarding the taxonomy and characteristics of chiken intestinal lactobacilli, which contitue major proportion of gut microflora. Therefore an attempt was made to isolate, identify and characterise a well adapted beneficial intestinal lactobacilli from broiler breeder flock, as a step towards developing probiotics to use in chicks for sustainable production of poultry in Andaman.
