Yield, physiology and productivity of rice under manganese stress

Manganese deficiency in rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Indrasan) deteriorated the grain quality when grown in kharif season of 1997 in refined sand at variable concentration of the nutrient, viz. 0.0055, 0.011, 0.055, 0.55, 5.5 and 11 mg Mn. Both low and excess Mn ® 0.55mgl-1) depressed the growth of plants and induced characteristic symptoms of deficiency as well as toxicity. Manganese stress ® 0.55 mgl-l) reduced biomass, panicle weight, grain yield, concentration of chlorophyll, sugars and Hill reaction activity and increased the concentration of phenols and peroxidase activity in leaves. In rice grain, the concentration of sugars, starch, protein and protein nitrogen decreased and that of non-protein and nitrite nitrogen increased under these conditions. Manganese concentration in leaves and seeds increased with an increase in manganese levels from 0.0055 to 11 mgl-1. In rice, the values of deficiency, threshold of deficiency and threshold of toxicity of Mn in leaves and grains were respectively 16,45 and 450 &g g-1 dry matter and 10,18 and 98 ug g-l dry matter.
