Plant breeding in Lithuania dates back to 1922 when the Dotnuva Plant Breeding Station was established. The chief method during the initial period of the Lithuanian plant breeding was analytic, later so called, 'synthetic' breeding which was included in crossing programmes. The share part of local varieties in the National Variety List is between 15.3-100, while the share part of home bred varieties in the seed production fields varies from 18.6 to 100
