[Effect of drying methods on raw material quality of aromatic plants]

In 2000-2002 at the Biochemistry-Technology Laboratory of the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture the effect of various drying methods on quality of aromatic plants was investigated. The objects of investigation were six perennial medical and spice herbs : lovage, hyssop, lavender, balm, oregano and sage. The grass material was dried in four ways : natural, convectional, active ventilation and by (HF) microwaves. The quality of raw material changed least when aromatic plants were dried naturally. Convectional drying slightly reduces the amount of essential oils in oregano, and contact drying - in sage. Aromatic quality of other plants does not change. Drying by (HF) microwaves reduces the amount of essential oils in all investigated plants except lovage. Drying by microwaves or convectionally reduces chlorophylls amount in raw material most. The amount of chlorophylls does not change only in lovage and lavender
