The author of this article describes the role of FAO in conservation of genetic diversity of livestock. Attention of the programme is given on gene conservation of five breeds - Latvian Blue cow, Latvian Brown cow, Latvian White pig, Latvian Darkheaded sheep and Latvian horse. These breeds have been made in Latvia and therefore Latvian scientists are mainly responsible for their protection and further use for the breeding purposes.
