Of late, there has been a growing emphasis on the use of less persistent, specific and safe methods for the control of crop pests. There is a fear of contamination of foodstuffs and ground water and running water with poisonous residues and possible ill effects on the ecosystem due to persistent and broad-spectrum pesticides. Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) qualifies to be an ideal alternative. Its efficacy in controlling some major insect pests of crops particularly those belonging to lepidoptera has been already recommended by many countries. BT is widely distributed in nature, and is being discovered repeatedly from different geographical areas are habitats frequented by varied complex of class insecta.
