Influence of fertilizer and water management on pest incidence and damage in direct-seeded rice

Component technologies on the use of agricultural inputs such as fertilizer and water in rice production are improved to maximize increase in yield and profit. However, the improved technologies modify the agronomic practices and this in turn, may affect pest diversity and density. Hence, a field experiment was set up to study the effect of developed crop management technologies for fertilizer application and water management on pest incidence and severity of damage in direct-seeded rice at PhilRice CES [Philippine Rice Research Inst. Central Experiment Station, Maligaya [Munoz, Nueva Ecija, (Philippines)] during 2002 dry season. Three rates of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers were applied depending on the treatment, and two water management treatments (continuous flooding and intermittent irrigation) were used. Regular pest monitoring showed that significantly more whitebacked planthoppers were present in continuously flooded plots compared to intermittently irrigated plots. Moreover, a significantly greater abundance of brown planthoppers was observed in plots treated with high rate of NPK fertilizer. While much damage was caused by rats, and considerable incidence of bakanae and bacterial leaf blight was recorded, no significant differences were observed among treatments in terms of effect on yield
