Five demo farms were established in Sitio Hiwalayan, Bacong, San Luis in collaboration with the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and the Local Government Unit (LGU) in the WS [wet season]. This is in response to the farm survey conducted by PhilRice [Philippine Rice Research Inst., Munoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines]. Survey showed that rice production in Sitio Hiwalayan was low owing to poor crop management. PSB Rc18 was used by farmer-cooperators. The soft "Laboy" soil in the area created problems for the tillage equipment. Zinc defficiency would be a problem especially in water logged soils. Low yield was attributed to rat damage during the panicle initiation and flowering stages. The rice crop was hit by southeast monsoon rains that contributed to the reduction of percent filled grains. The project demonstrated the advantage of using the floating tiller in the area. "Laboy" is peat soil that is very wet and deep, rich with organic matter that is pushed by high water table toward the surface. This condition makes it very difficult to operate the floating tillers
