Suppression of Rhizoctonia solani in corn by hypovirulent binucleate Rhizoctonia and the nature of protection

The soil infested with Rhizoctonia solani AG1-IA was subjected to three treatments; one was amended with hypovirulent binucleate Rhizoctonia (BNR) Rhv7 grown in rice-rice hull, the other was amended with rice-rice hull only and the last was without any treatment. Disease severity at soft-dough stage of corn planted in Rhv7-treated plots was reduced as shown by their resistant reaction to R. solani AG1-IA. Plants without Rhv7 treatment remained susceptible to the disease. Suppression of banded leaf and sheath blight (BLSB) by Rhv7 was also indicated by lower disease incidence and delayed onset of the disease. Experiments on the effect of Rhv7 on corn plants inoculated at different leaf sheath positions showed that leaf sheaths inoculated with R. solani AG1-IA Rs35 isolate near the Rhv7-inoculated site had smaller lesion size than leaf sheaths inoculated with RS35 further from Rhv7 inoculum. However, protection diminished as the period before inoculation with virulent isolate was increased from 3 to 10 d but disease suppression was extended from leaf sheath 3 to leaf sheath 4. These and previously reported findings indicate that the mechanism involved in the control of R. solani AG1-IA by BNR Rhv7 is induced systemic resistance
