Under high YSB [yellow stem borers] populations, handpicking of egg masses could reduce whitehead population but had no tremendous advantage. Majority of the larvae and pupae were present in the rice stubbles, indicating that rice stubbles could be a high source of stem borer populations. As more YSB pupae were found during harvest period, their timely destruction is critical to limit survival and adult emergence. Shredding stalks very close to the ground during harvest may help remove a number of larvae and pupae present in the rice stem. Plowing an infested field immediately after harvest has proved to be an effective technique for controlling various pests though not practical. Hence, if water is not available, more practical and appropriate strategies must be developed to manage stem borer resident populations in the left over stubbles and stalks. An insect pest diagnostic kit was developed for farmers to identify 14 common insect pests of rice based on insect feeding habits, plant injuries, and ecology. It was also developed to review and update taxonomic information about present, past and potential pests associated with rice across agro-ecosystems described by Muller (1983 IRRI) and Shepard (1995 IRRI).
