Utilization of the anther culture technique in the development of cultivars tolerant to nutrient deficient soils and of quality rice

Parent materials were identified based on their tolerance to nutrient-deficient conditions. Five popular (Rc 18, Rc28, Rc52, Rc82, and IR64) and five traditional (Sampaguita, Milagrosa, Ginitan, Sampaguita green, and Azucena) varieties were evaluated in a pot experiment using the MOET [minus one element technique] with the following formulations: Complete, minus N, P, K, Zn, S, Cu, Fe, Mg, Ca, and Mn both on sand and soil media. Only PSB Rc18 withstood the high pH that ranged from 7.0-10.0 with accompanying salinity problems, using the sand medium. Likewise, it had the greatest tolerance to N, P, K, and Zn deficiencies when the trial was repeated using the soil medium. Ginitan was tolerant to Cu, Mg, and Fe; IR64 to S and Ca, while PSB Rc82 to Mn deficiencies. Number of tillers was the most affected parameter by the nutrient deficiencies. The above materials identified will then be used in the generation of F1s that will be utilized as anther sources. Further screening and verification are recommended
