Comparative study of canola and juncea varieties planted under Tandojam conditions [Pakistan]

An experiment was conducted to asses the adaptability and growth behaviour of canola and juncea varieties obtained under Tandojam conditions. Four canola varieties Shiralee, Rainbow, PR-1005, PR-1007 and two local mustard varieties Gajsarsoon and S-9 were tested. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications having net plot size of 11.25 m2. The results mainly highly significant for all the characters during the trail. Variety S-9 took maximum (78) days to flower and (152) days to maturity, whereas variety S-9 matured in (131) days and produced tallest plant with a height of 180.5 cm. It was observed that due to its height variety S-9 produced maximum number of branches (24.75) and highest number of pods (292.3) It was also noted that canola species matured 10-15 days late in comparison to brassica varieties, they were comparatively of short stature produced less number of branches and pods/plan. Variety S-9 gave maximum seed yield of 1820 kg/hac followed by Shiralee where seed yield was obtained as 1978 kg/ha. There is highly significant difference between canola and brassica species in case of grain yield. There is a big difference of 9 to 10% for oil content between canola and brassica species. It is concluded that as there is a difference of 10% in oil content between canola and juncea varieties and less than 5% differences for yield amongst above species. The sowing of canola is recommended for the farmers.
