Study on the effect of bovine somatotropin (bST) on production and composition of kundhi buffalo milk

A total of three buffalo farms were included in present study. All the experimental buffaloes were kept under pre-treatment for appropriate period under similar management conditions. After the end of pre-treatment period, buffaloes were injected bST in a dose of 35 mg on alternate days. Milk yield during both periods, were recorded twice a day. It was concluded from the present study that administration of bST to lactating buffaloes increased milk production. The trend of increase in milk yield of bST treated buffaloes was variable. Buffaloes treated with bST increased their feed intake. Availability of feed according to the requirement of bST treated buffaloes affected the production of milk. There was no significant effect of bST on the composition of milk (i.e. Total Solids, Fat, Solids Not Fat and Ash etc.). Probability of bST adopted by various buffalo farms was calculated and result showed a loss of Rs. 4.58 per buffalo per day at Rao Hanif Farm Karachi. It was due to not receiving incremental feed for a week as injecting bST to buffaloes had increased their feed intake. However, after adoption of bST Idrees Farm benefited Rs. 8.32 and Niamat Leghari Farm Rs. 4.38 per buffalo per day.
