Effects of different potting mixtures and nitrogen sources on the performance of brassaia seedlings-I

Seedlings of Schefflera actinophylla were planted in 6-inch clay pots having different potting mixtures such as Leaf mould + garden soil + silt, FYM + garden soil + silt, Biofert + garden soil + silt and Greenfert + garden soil silt. Potting mixture Biofert + garden soil + silt gave maximum plant height (19.74 cm), number of leaves (23.5 1), number of branches per plant (7.42 and leaf area (39.48 cm), whereas minimum plant height (15 cm), number of leaves (16.75), number of branches per plant (5.08) and leaf area (26.64 cm 2) were noted in Greenfert + garden soil + silt. Plant survival percentage (68.33 %) was higher in Leaf mould + garden soil + silt as compared to other potting mixtures, while plant survival percentage (25%) was found minimum in Greenfert + garden soil + silt. In case of nitrogen sources, urea gave maximum plant height (20.94 cm), number of leaves (22.19) and number of branches per plant (7.87), while minimum plant height (16.01), number of leaves (19.72) and number of branches per plant (5.68) were recorded in plants supplied with ammonium sulphate. The highest plant survival percentage 4 3.33%) and lowest plant survival percentage (51.67%) were recorded in ammonium sulphate and urea treated plants, respectively.
