A field experiment was designed to study the potential of different cultivars of barely, oats. triticales and vetch species as forage crops for herbage yield and nutritive value during, 1988 at the Waite Agricultural Research Institute Farm. There were significant differences in dry matter yield and Crude protein percentage between cereal cultivars and vetch species. Vetch cv Languedoc and Popany produced significantly higher dry matter yield than other species and cultivars. Among cereals oats cv Coolabah consistently produced higher dry matter Meld throughout the season. There was no significant difference in crude protein percentage within species of vetch and cultivars of oats, barley and triticales. Similarly, there was no significant difference between cereal cultivars of barley cv Forrest, oats cv Coolabah, N.Z. Cape and triticales cv Currency. On the basis of evidence available to choose the best of these cereals and vetch species, oats cv Coolabah and vetch cv Languedoc produced consistently higher dry matter yield during the season.
