Silybum marianum, a medicinal plant, is used traditionally in the treatment of liver disease. Purified extract made from the fruits of Silybum marianum (milk thistle) is known as Silymarin, a mixture of flavolignans, namely Silybin, Silychristin and Silydianin. Nowadays, Silymarin is used as a dietary supplement and is consistently one of the widely used alternative medicines. Its extract also appears to possess anti-carcinogenic activity.
