Pharmacognosy of the fruits of Pimpinella anisum L.

The fruits of Pimpinella anisum Linn. are claimed to possess expectorant, stimulant, carminative, diuretic and diaphoretic properties. They are also used in flatulent colic and in some pharmaceutical preparations for asthma. The paper. deals with the organic analysis, fluorescence studies, water and alcohol soluble matter, ash values, other physical parameters and T.L.C. behaviour of the fruit (commercially known as seed). Keeping in view its medicinal as well as economic importance, pharmacognostical and phytochemical standards are presented as an aid in the identification of genuine sample.
