Studies on beneficial role and subchronic toxicity of livergen: A polyherbal hepatoprotective drug

Acute and subchronic toxicological evaluation of a polyherbal hepatoprotective drug Livergen was carried out in albino rats to assess its effects on morphology, gross behaviour, body weight, biochemical, hematological and histopathological changes. They were fed with Livergen in both forms, syrup and tablets; standard drugs Jetepar syrup and Bilsan tablets for comparative study, while distilled water served as control. The toxicity studies revealed that the drug under administered doses had no adverse effects on hepatic, renal, hemopoietic and reproductive systems, even on 46 times and 50 times higher than recommended dose level of Livergen syrup and tablets, respectively, daily for 90 days. Autopsy findings showed no gross changes in vital organs. This is also confirmed by histopathological studies. No mortality was observed during 90 days. Significant increase in weight was noted in the drug treated groups. The anabolic activity present was dose dependent. Biochemical studies indicated the presence of all the essential minerals and trace elements in the herbal preparation. The maximum benefit in hemoglobin status was achieved in the drug treated animals as compared to the groups fed with standard market drugs. As regards the serum SGPT and SGOT levels and clotting time there was no change observed between drug and control groups, indicating the non-toxic reaction of the drug on liver tissue. Furthermore, Livergen also increased 16.7% fertility in albino rats. It is therefore concluded that Livergen is a safe drug and has a significant nutritional supplement value to meet the requirement under illness and stress.
