Effects of plant derivatives on settling response and fecundity of peach fruit fly Bactrocera zonata (Saunders)

Effects of three plants viz neem Azadirachta indica seed, sweet flag Acorus calamus and turmeric Curcuma longa rhizomes each extracted in petroleum-ether (60-80 degree C) acetone and ethanol were evaluated against Peach fruit fly Bactrocera zonata (Saunders), at Pest Management Research Programme, IPEP, NARC, Islamabad in October, 2003. Settling response studied by providing a free choice of treated and untreated guava fruits to the flies in a cage indicated the lowest number of flies settled on the fruits treated with acetone extract of neem. However all the plants have significant effect on settling response of the fly. Significantly lower number of the pupae was obtained from the exposed guava treated with turmeric as compared with sweet-flag and neem extracts, although comparatively more number of flies settled on the fruits treated with numeric extracts. This indicated that turmeric extracts had suppressed egg laying and development of pupae and adults. Minimum number of pupae and adults were obtained from the fruits treated with 2% concentration of plant extracts. At this concentration only 1.44 pupae were obtained which was significantly lower than 7.78, and 9.39 pupae obtained at 1 and 0.5 percent concentrations.
