Effect of rice bran and maize gluten (30 % C.P.) on the growth performance of major carps viz, Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala, in fertilized ponds

The experiment was performed for the period of six months in two earthen ponds. Pond 1 supplemented with rice bran pond 2 treated with maize gluten. Each pond has area of 200 m2. Each pond was stocked with 30 Labeo rohita, 25 Catla catla and 1.5 Cirrhinus mrigala. At the time of stocking, the average body weight of Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala were 40.2, 52.4 and 36.0 g while 53.4, 50.9 and 39.6 g in Pond- 1 and Pond-2, respectively. The average total lengths were 15.2, 14.0 and 15.4 cm while 15.6, 13.5 and 16.0 cm for Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala in Pond-1 and Pond-2 respectively. After the next day of stocking, both the ponds were fertilized with cow-dung, applied at the rate of 0.2 g N/100 g of fish body weight daily. Feed was applied to the ponds at the rate of 6 % of fish body weight daily. The cultural fish stocked both from Pond-1 and Pond-2 were sampled fortnightly to monitor the growth performance i.e., body weight and total length. After recording the data, the fish were released back into their respective ponds. Water samples from both the ponds were taken fortnightly and analyzed for physico-chemical characteristics. In Pond-1, the average weight grain of 167.5, 175.6 and 135.4 g while in Pond-2, 24.6, 293.9, and 204.6 g were recorded for Labeo rohita, Catla catla and Cirrhinus mrigala, respectively. Supplementation of Pond-2, with maize gluten caused marked increase in fish production. Net fish yield in Pond-1, and Pond-2 was 29.040 kg/pond/year and 42.566 kg/pond/year, respectively. The net fish production/ ha/year were computed to be 1129.47 kg/ha/year and 1750.02 kg/ha/ year for Pond-1, and Pond-2, respectively. The pond treated with maize gluten (30 % C.P.) showed 1.556 times more net fish production as compared to the pond, supplemented with rice bran which is a feed having too low protein content. There was an increase in planktonic biomass corresponding to the increase in the water temperature in both the ponds. There was a highly negative relationship between the water temperature and the dissolved oxygen.
