Determination of a suitable nitrogen fertilizer for attaining maximum wheat yield on salt affected soil

Two wheat cultivars, Selection line (salt tolerant) cv. Potohar (salt sensitive) were used plants of both cultivars were subjected to 0 (control) or (100 mol m3) NaCl and three N sources (CAN, (NH4)2SO4 and urea) at the rate of 100 kg N ha- 1. Of the different morphological parameters only plant height increased with the fertilizers, whereas salinity had no significant effect, on number of tillers per plant, and flag leaf per plant. The number of tillers in plants treated with CAN were more a compared to plants treated with ammonium sulphate, urea or control. All the fertilizers increased the chlorophyll a and b contents in both wheat cultivars. Chlorophyll a/b ratio was maximum in plants treated with CAN. Generally Selection line contained more chlorophyll contents that cv. Potohar. In both wheat cultivars NR activity reduced under saline conditions however, it enhanced under all fertilizer treatments, maximum in plants treated with urea. Total sugar contents both cultivars were reduced significantly by salinity. Although all N-fertilizers increased sugar contents in both wheat cultivars however, higher sugar contents were recorded in plants treated with calcium ammonium nitrate. Salinity had no significant effect on nitrogen concentration in shoot and root both wheat cultivars. Root N concentration was higher in plats treated with urea and CAN than that in plants treated with other fertilizers. Phosphorus concentration in shoot remained unaffected by salinity and N fertilizers, treatment. Root P was high in plants treated with CAN. There was no significant effect of salinity or N fertilizers on shoot K+ of both cultivars, whereas K+ concentration decreased in root of both cultivars under salinity. Whereas, shoot Ca-2 concentration was maximum under all fertilizer treatment. Root Ca+2 reduced application of salinity, but there was an increase concentration under all N fertilizer treatments. Recorded in plants treated with CAN Selection line restricted the uptake of Na+2 to shoot and retained higher amount of Na+ in the roots. All the N fertilizers increased the Na+ contents, however, all the N fertilizers reduced the accumulation of Cl concentration and the slat Potohar accumulated higher concentration of Cl than selection line. There was no significant effect of salinity or fertilizer on the length, number of spikes, and number spikelets per spike but salinity significantly affected number of grains per spike, yield per plot and 1000-grain weight. It can be concluded from the present study that calcium ammonium nitrate mid ammonium sulphate performed better than urea under saline conditions.
