Comparative incidence of insect pest complex on cotton varieties (FH-900 and NIAB-98), subjected to organic and synthetic fertilizers

The present project was launched with the objective to find out the comparative effects of organic (Farm yard Manure, F.Y.M.) and synthetic fertilizer on incidence of insect pest complex of cotton. The materials employed comprised of a field grown crop of 2 cotton cultivars, viz., as well as, a field available lot of sucking and chewing insect pests. The trials were, however, laid out at Postgraduate Agricultural Research Station, Jhang Road, Faisalabad, are there 2 treatments and 2 cotton varieties, with 6 repeat each. The seasonal mean leaf-1 population of whitefly, jassid and thrips and %age of damage of spotted were recorded from 26-06-01 to 22- 09-01 at weekly intervals, from plot, left unsprayed. The data of insect pest from sprayed plots were recorded at pre and post spray (24, 48, 72 hrs and 1 week). The results of analysis shows that both treatments (organic and synthetic fertilizer) are same to affect insect pest population on cotton varieties viz. However, the crop grown in organic fertilizer harbours lesser number of insect pests. So, we can conclude that the use of organic fertilizer alone will not be enough to control the insects. However, if the use of organic fertilizer is integrated with judicious use of pesticides, the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides can be minimized.
