Production and marketing of date palm in Panjgur and Turbat districts of Balochistan [Pakistan]

Balochistan is the main and land of Pakistan. The climate and agro ecological condition of Balochistan is well suited for growing of date palm. Panjgur and Turbat districts are famous for date production and were taken as study area. The variables affecting yield and production of dates are socioeconomic conditions and production practices prevalent in the study area. The average yield of dates in two districts outlined above was 18.5 kg per palm that was quite lower than potential yield i.e. 40-60 kg per palm, the causes of low yield are illustrated in the text of the paper. In order to make dates as profitable enterprise, yield needs to be increased substantially by proper farm management by the date growers. The marketing of dates is also subjected to severe problems / constraints. The unmated roads and other unfavorable environment / conditions left no alternative with date grower except to sell their produce at farm gate to commission agent at nominal prices. The marketing system need improvement to a considerable extent. The parameters impediment to high yield and production of dates and there after marketing of dates in Panjgur and Turbat districts are discussed in this paper.
