Response of wheat and rabi weeds to foliar application of different plant water extracts

A field investigation was undertaken to evaluate the influence of aqueous extracts of three allelopathic plants viz., sorghum, sunflower and eucalyptus on wheat and its weeds and possible synergistic effect by combining these water extracts on the growth of wheat and its weeds. The chaffed sorghum and sunflower material and eucalyptus leaves were soaked in water (1:10) for 114 hours, the filtrates were collected to get sorghum, sunflower eucalyptus water extracts and concentrated to 20 times. The three concentrated water extracts were applied individually as well as in combinations with each other. Sunflower water extract conc. at the rate of 12 1 ha-1 two sprays at and 40 DAS gave consistently better weed control especially of density and dry weight of broad leaved dock (upto 47 and 24-65%, respectively). It was also effective on canary grass and sweet clover. Additionally, it increased wheat grain yield by about 5.5% and was the best treatment in terms o highest net benefits (Rs. 28395 ha-1) and marginal rate o return (7797.5%). Among combinations of plant water extracts one foliar spray of sorghum, sunflower and eucalyptus water extracts each at the rate of 12 1 ha-1 at 30 DAS performed better giving 34 - 72% reduction in broad leaved dock dry weight, though not much promontory to wheat yield (only 2.6%). It was followed in weed control by combination of sorghum, sunflower and eucalyptus water extracts each at the rate of 16 1 ha-1. Isoproturon at the rate of 1 kg a.i. ha- 1 and hand weeding at 30 DAS have proven to be almost equally good in suppressing all weeds of wheat but when evaluating them in economic and marginal analyses, these could not outweigh sunflower water extract two sprays.
