Behaviour of soil bacteria to nitrilotriacetate and nickel

The studies evaluated the impact of NTA on bacteria in nickel contaminated soil by determining changes in the number of free Ni sup(2+)sub(aq) ions under the influence of the chelator. It was found out that nickel toxicity in soil was usually reduced with addition of NTA, what was represented by a stimulation of the population growth of Gram negative bacteria and Pseudomonas, the strongest stimulation was observed at the Ni/NTA molar ratio of 1:4. NTA elevated the number of water-washable nickel ions in soil and considerably reduced the number of free, non-complexed nickel ions, which were detected only at the lowest dose of chelator, i.e. at the Ni/NTA molar ratio of 1:1. The amounts of Ni sup(2+)sub(aq) ions in this soil was aproximately 6 times lower compared to the soil containing only nickel, what meant a 10-fold increase in nickel ions, which were introduced into soil
