Effect of chromium or carnitine on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, and carcass composition of finishing pigs

Effects of chromium amino nicotinate or L-carnitine supplemented in corn-soybean meal base diets on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics and composition were tested. Sixty four weaning pigs (32 castrated males and 32 females) were randomly allotted into 16 pens (4 pigs per pen and 4 pens per treatment). The pigs were randomly assigned in one of the following treatments: standard diet, standard diet+50 ppm L-carnitine, and standard diet + 200 or 400 ppb chromium amino nicotinate. The experiment had been done for 120 days. The results revealed that chromium amino nicotinate or L-carnitine had no effect (P0.05) on feedlot performance (slaughtering weight, feed intake, average daily gain, and feed per gain), carcass characteristics (back fat, carcass length, and dressing percentage), and carcass composition (lean, loin, belly, fat, bone, skin, and fore leg).
