Certain ecological aspects of animals inhabiting seagrass Halophila ovalis ecosystem in Pattani Bay

Composition and abundance of macrofauna were determined over a 12-month period (1993-1994) from seagrass Halophila ovalis community in Pattani Bay at Dato and Budi villages and Laem Tachi, Pattani Province. The study covered their habitats and their relationships with seagrass biomass. Forty three species of animals in 4 phyla were found. Nineteen species were in Phylum Molusca, 11 species in Phylum Arthropoda, 11 species in Phylum Annelida and 2 species in Phylum Chordata. Nerita turrita was the most abundant mollusk comprising 65.3 percent of all mollusk found. Amphipod Gammarus sp., the most abundant crustaceans, comprised 82.7 percent of all arthropod collected. There was no difference in number of fauna species found among areas. Change in seagrass biomass significantly affected number of fauna species in the community.
