Stomach contents of Thunnus albacares and Katsuwonus pelamis caught in the Andaman sea and the eastern Indian ocean

Diet composition of yellowfin tuna in the Eastern Indian Ocean was found comprising various groups of marine organisms (tiny crustaceans, cephalopods, pelagic fish, deep sea fish and even young tunas). These organisms can be classified into 27 families of which 16 families belong to fishes, 5 to cephalopods and 6 to crustaceans. Regarding the IRI computation, in young yellowfin tuna smaller than 60 cm the top 5 families dominated in stomach contents were Lysiosquilidae, Scombridae, Ommastrephidae, Gempylidae and Squillidae. In males larger than 80 cm the most inportant diet were Ommastrephidae, Scombridae, Cranchiidae, Lysiosquillidae and Bramidae, whilst in females they were Ommastrephidae, Gempylidae, Bramidae, Lysiosquillidae and Onychoteuthidae. In skipjack, the stomach content study gave a poor result due to merely a small number of samples having food in stomachs and so data were insufficient for valid enumeration.
