Study on water quality classification by biological index

Water quality in Thailand's urban and industrial areas has deteriorated as a result of technology development. Discharge of untreated waste water degrades water quality in rivers and klongs (canals). The contamination of rivers is not caused solely by industrial waste water; domestic and agricultural waste are also significant sources. Generally water quality can be determined by 3 groups of parameter: physical, chemical, and biological parameters. Among environmental scientists, the first and second parameters are widely used whereas the last one is less important. The objective of this research was to develop a biological index water quality classification in important watersheds (Ping, Wang, Yom, Nan, Moon, Chi and Surat) by using aquatic insects as the index. The study was divided into 3 phases: collecting aquatic insects for identification, drawing and specimen photography, calculation of the index using computer and measurements of certain physical and chemical parameters of the water. After 3 years of investigation, using 10 as the highest and 0 as the lowest values of water quality, biological index have shown significant value to indicate the status of water resources. The result of physical and chemical parameter such as pH, DO, BOD and COD showed insignicant relation to biological index. The highest mean value is 8, 9, 0.9 and 14, respectively. The lowest mean is 6.6, 5.5, 0.6 and 8.9 respectively.
