Study on seed production of algae Gracilaria fisheri by using oyster shell as the substrate of carpospore

Study was conducted at National Institute of Coastal Aquaculture, Songkhla province between June to July, 1995. Results demonstrate that when stocking small pieces of oyster shell with cystocarpic thalli, substrate was attached with carpospore within 24 hrs. Newly liberated carpospore is transparent and grobular in shape, 13-30 microns in diameter, with several bluish yellow-green and redish-brown pigments. Then they were germinated and cell division tookplace. The fullgrown carpospore was transformed in to an individual young thalli within 30 days. After a nursery period of about 45 days survival rate and density of young thalli was 37.16 percent, and averaged of 814 thalli per piece of shell respectively. This experiment suggests that 100 pieces of shell when stocked with 100 gms. Of cystocarpic thalli, will result 76 pieces or 80 percent of shell substrate attached with 61,800 young thalli of 650-3,500 microns in length under optimal environment and water quality.
