Studies on biochemical and physiological characteristics of chilli pepper for industry

Capsaicin contents in fruit of 3 cluster varieties of chilli pepper: Chor-KKU, Chor-Sawai (long fruit, LF), and Chor-Sawai (short fruit, SF) were analyzed and campared with the marketable variety, Huay-Sithon. Percentages of capsaicin content of Chor-Sawai LF and Chor-KKU were higher than that of Huay-Sithon. Chor-Sawai SF and Huay-Sithon had similar percentages of capsaicin content. The responses to drought of the new cluster varieties, Chor-Sawai LF and Chor-Sawai SF compared with their parents, Chor-KKU and Bannai, and marketable variety, Huay-Sithon were also clarified. Seedlings of all varieties were grouped into two sets and grown in the plastic pots. The first set of seedlings were watered appropriately throughout the experiment (non-drought), while the second set of seedlings were subjected to drought condition until severe wilting occurred and then rewatered (drought). Thereafter, recovering ability (measured by leaf water potential, LWP) between non-drought and drought treatments of each variety was recorded. The differences of LWP between drought and non-drought at 54 hrs after rewatering in the new cluster varieties were not significantly different and similar to that of Huay-Sithon (reported as drought resistant variety), whereas those differences in Chor-KKU and Bannai were significantly different. Therefore, the recovering ability in both new cluster varieties, were relatively similar to that in Huay-Sithon, and higher than those in their parents.
