Effect of water stress at different growth stages on yield of groundnut

Experiments were conducted on Warin soil series at the Agricultural Development Research Center (ADRC), Khon Kaen Province, during the dry seasons of 1991 and 1992 with the aim of determining the effect of water stress on yield of groundnut cultivar Tainan 9. In 1991, the treatments consisted of 1) continous irrigation without fertilizer 2) continuous irrigation 3) water stress at early growth 4) water stress at early flowering 5. water stress at early pegging 6) water stress at early pod filling and 7) water stress at seed development. Treatments 2-7 received fertilizers at the rates of 19, 56 and 38 kg/ha of N,P2O5, and K2O respectively. Treatments in the 1992 experiment were essentially the same as the previous year but with the omission of treatment 1 (continous irrigation without fertilizer). A randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replicates was used is both years. Results indicated that water stress plays important roles on the yield of groundnut. Adequate water supply should be maintained in order to get optimum yield. Yield decreases due to water stress at different growth stages follows the following sequence: water stress at seed development at early pod filling at early growth at early pegging.
