Seven surveys were conducted in Loei Province between March 1996 to February 1998. Five hundred and sixteen blood samples were examined for motile blood protozoa infection. Woo's method was used. Thirty cows tested positive for Trypanosoma evansi infection (5.81 percent). The infection rate increased at the beginning of the wet season and again at the beginning of the cool season each year. No parasites were detected in the dry season. The number of spontaneously aborting cows increased commensurately with the infection rate in these cows. Moreover, the average milk yield of the infected group was significantly lower (P0.01) compared with the average milk yield of the non-infected group. In order to prevent these losses, parasite control measures should be implemented in the wet season when the vector density is high.
