Thirty Tswana yearlings (18 castrates and 12 females) were used for a feeding trial conducted at Botswana College of Agriculture, Content Farm, Gaborone for a period of 120 days. The study was to investigate the performance of Tswana goats fed caged layer waste (CLW) as a nitrogen source. CLW was processed by sun-drying or deep-stacking and fed as supplements to Tswana goats fed buffalo grass hay plus 5 percent molasses powder as basal diet. Water was provided daily, and mineral block were offered ad lib to all goats. The goats fed sun-dried CLW and grass hay had an average daily gain of 64.3 g while those supplemented with deep-stacked CLW gained 65.4 g daily compared to 7.5 g for goats fed only buffalo grass hay. CLW as supplements to buffalo grass hay improved feed conversion efficiency of the Tswana goats. This study indicates that CLW can be processed economically and the nutrients can be used to supplement poor quality grass hay especially in the prolonged dry season of Botswana.
