Thailand has one of the richest freshwater small fauna in the world; over 170 species are currently recognized. However, species that transmit animal diseases, or are suspected to, are relatively few. At present, only 23 freshwater snail species are implicated or suspected in animal disease transmission. These species are restricted to two orders and seven families. The parasites they transmit are blood flukes, liver flukes, lung flukes, intestinal flukes and some lung nematodes.
