Properties of some selected soils in Northeast Honshu Island of Japan

Properties of twelve Andisols with textural class predominately loam, distributed on the Northeast Honshu Island of Japan, were studied. Soils had exceptional characteristics, such as dark color, high organic matter content, and low bulk density that are attributed to the development of high porosity having well-developed soil structure with a range of pore sizes that retain a large amount of water at varying tensions. Sediments of the studied soils were very positive skewed and well sorted. The values of kurtosis showed that the soils were very leptokurtic to extremely leptokurtic. Uniformity index indicated that the soils were not very uniformed but fairly graded. The amount of easily available water and total available water for plants in these soils was more than 250 g/kg and 415 g/kg, respectively. Soil pH ranged between 4.64 and 6.40. Organic matter content of the studied soils ranged from 77.1 to 247.8 g/kg. Electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable sodium percentage and sodium adsorption ration of the soils were suitable for rice cultivation. The correlation between bulk density and moisture properties was significantly negative. Organic carbon was found positively correlated with moisture properties and negatively with pH and bulk density.
