Lipids and fatty acids of dogfish (Squalus acanthias) liver oil extracted by different methods

Effect of extraction methods on lipids and fatty acids of dogfish (squalus acanthias) liver oil was investigated. The Bligh and Dyer method showed the highest yield (50.3 percent) when compared with the direct heating method and steaming method (37.0 and 30.9 percent, respectively). Saponification value, acid value and free fatty acid were highest in the oil extracted by the Bligh and Dyer method. Iodine values of the oils extracted by the three procedures were similar. In addition, oil extracted by steaming method was found to present the lowest peroxide value. The most abundant fatty acid in the dogfish liver oils was oleic acid (C 18:1), which ranged from 184.5 to 202.5 mg/g oil, followed by palmitic acid (C 16:0) and docasaenoic acid (C 22:1). Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C 22:6) ranged from 55.4 to 56.5 mg/g oil while eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C 20:5) ranged between 33.9 and 34.7 mg/g oil. The extracted by the steaming method tended to contain slightly higher content of each fatty acid compared with the oils extracted by the other two methods.
