Field experiment was conducted during the wet season of 1995 to evaluate the effect of nitrogen either from urea or sesbenia alone or in their combination on BR31 rice. Three doses of nitrogen from urea 0, 60 and 100 kg/ha; two doses of Sesbania 4 and 6 t/ha and two combinations of urea and sesbania 30 kg N from urea + 2 t/ha Sesbania and 50 kg N from urea + 3 t/ha sesbania were compared. Biomass production, leaf area, plant height and tiller were higher with higher dose of N from urea. filled grain and harvest index were higher in plots received sesbania treatment. Rice yields from plots fertilized only with sesbania were less than plots fertilized only with urea. However, integrated application of sesbania and urea produced high grain yield than urea alone. The highest grain yield of 5.84 t/ha was achieved with 50 kg N from urea + 3 t sesbania/ha. Sesbania alone increased yield by 24-32 percent; applying 30-50 kg N/ha with 2-3 t sesbania/ha increased yield by 55-65 percent over the control. Sesbania has an effect similar to that of basal N application. Integrated application of 2-3 t sesbania/ha with urea substituted 30-50 kg urea N/ha
