Iodine content of iodinated salt produced and distributed in endemic area of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in Northeast Thailand

Iodine content in 40 samples of iodinated salt conllected from endemic areas of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) from 3 districts namely Pupaman, Chumpae and Srichumpu in Khon Kaen province as well as from producers in other provinces such as Maha Sarakham, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Udon Thani were measured. The average of iodine content was found to be 23.89 part per million. Twenty percent (8 in 40 samples) of iodinated salt had iodine content over 30.0 part per million whilst 80 percent (32 in 40 samples) had less than 30.0 part per million. Therefore, quality control is needed in the process of preparation of iodinated salt. The continuous supply of high quality iodinated salt in endemic area of IDD will subsequently have an impact on preventing and controlling iodine deficiency disorders.
