Effects of application method of plant residues inside soil ridges on the growth and yield of carrots grown on wet lowlands

Utilization of indigenous materials, i.e. rice straw, wheat straw, rice husks and rice husk charcoal, as soil aerating materials to increase the yield of storage root of carrot under field conditions in a wet lowland was investigated. The materials were placed in soil ridges to make aerial spaces in the soil for better storage root development. The materials were used either unmixed with soil (the mass treatment) or mixed with soil (the mixture treatment). The growth characteristics and yield of carrots grown in the mass and mixture treatments were compared with those of carrots grown in a conventional plot (control). Water depth between the ridges was kept at 20 mm throughout the growing period in order to imitate the wet soil conditions of wet lowlands in subtropical and tropical countries. The fresh and dry weight of storage roots were greatest in the rice husk charcoal mass, followed by rice husk charcoal mixture, rice husk mass, rice straw mass and rice husk mixture. The fresh and dry weight of the storage roots from the rice husk charcoal mass treatment was double that in the control. With the same material, the mass treatment gave a greater yield than the mixture treatment. The dry weight of the total phytomass per plant was approximately 1.8 times greater in the mass treatment with rice husk charcoal than that in the control. Similarly, the above-ground phytomass per plant was approximately 1.5 times greater. The leaf area per plant in the rice husk charcoal mass treatment was almost double that in the control. The net photosynthetic rate was 1.4 times greater in the mass treatment with rice husk charcoal than in the control. A higher edible biomass index was obtained from the rice husk charcoal mass treatment.
