Effect of hydrogen cyanamide and time of application on bud breaking and fruit quality of kiwifruit cv. Bruno in Thailand

Study on the effect of hydrogen cyanamide applied at the rate of 3 percent and 5 percent concentration, at 4 different application times on bud breaking of kiwifruit cultivar Bruno was conducted at the Royal Ang Khang Station from January to November 1997. Hydrogen cyanamide at 5 percent concentration can induce more bud bursts on a cane than that at 3 percent and control. Hydrogen cyanamide at 5 percent applied at January 15, gave the highest bud break while those at 3 percent applied at February 25, gave the lowest result. Hydrogen cyanamide at all rates studied gave higher bud breaking than that of the control (which applied only water) on February 25. The early application of hydrogen cyanamide induced bud breaking faster than the later application. Fruits from the 5 percent hydrogen cyanamide applied at February 11, were the biggest with greater weight and higher volume,, but this was not statistically significant from those of the control fruits. Whereas 3 percent hydrogen cyanamide applied at January 15, gave the lowest fruit weight. The ascorbic acid and total soluble solids contents of the harvested fruits from the hydrogen cyanamide treated vines were not significantly different from those of the control ones.
