Development of a low protein high energy practical diet for sutch's catfish, Pangasius sutchi Fowler

Experiment on development of a low protein high energy practical diet for Sutch's catfish was conducted through feeding fingerlings with three diets-- a developed diet, a broiler chicken commercial diet, and a walking catfish commercial diet-- in six 800 square m grow-out earthen ponds for 16 weeks. Each dietary treatment was randomly assigned to two ponds which were each stocked with 1,200 fish averaging 20-25 g in body weight. Fish were fed everyday at the rates decreasing from 5 to 3 percent of fish body weight, and daily feed allowances were adjusted biweekly on the basis of fish weight gain. Fish growth, condition factor, survival and feed conversion ratio were compared among diets. Results indicate that protein content of practical diets for Sutch's catfish could be reduced from 26 to 18 percent, without ill effects on growth performance, survival and feed efficiency, when high quality protein sources were used as feed ingredients and energy was present to make an energy (kcal) to protein (g) ratio of about 13 to 1.
