Study on the ratio of soybean straw to rice straw in urea treatment on performance of cattle

Fifteen Holstein Friesian x Native heifers with an initial body weight of 156.87+-17.50 kilogram were assigned into three urea treated straw groups with different combinations of soybean straw (SS) and rice straw (RS), by usng Randomized Complete Block Design. The animals were fed with urea treated straw ad libitum plus 1.0 kilograms of concentrate per head per day except during the first two weeks of digestibility trial of treated straw. The feeding period was 5 1/2 months. Protein content was increased in treated straw with higher soybean straw in the combination Nutrient digestibility levels of the two treatments with high soybean straw (50 percent SS 50 percent RS and 70 percent SS 30 percent RS) were higher (P0.05) than the treatment with low soybean straw (30 percent SS 70 percent RS), except for crude fiber. Heifers in the treatment of 70 percent SS 30 percent RS had higher (P0.05) daily dry matter intake (4.4 percent LW) and tended to have higher (P0.05) daily body weight gain (0.54 kg/d) than those in the other two treatments (3.68 and 3.88 percent LW of DM intake, and 0.45 and 0.41 kg/d of BW gain for 30 percent SS 70 percent RS and 50 percent SS 50 percent RS, respectively)
