Evaluation of agricultural and industrial wastes for the control of damping-off of chinese kale (Brassica alboglabra Bailey) caused by Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc.

Soil amended with different agricultural and industrial wastes such as cow dung, ground mesocarp fiber of oil palm after oil extraction, organic fertilizer, poultry manure and bedding material mixture, rice husks soaked with molasses and sludge cake from a frozen seafood factory were tested for the control of damping-off chinese kale seedlings caused by Sclerotium rolfsii. Most wastes not only reduced seed germination but also increased the numbers of sclerotia of S. rolfsii. A study of soil enzymatic activity showed that enzymatic activity of beta-Glucosidase increased both at 30 days after amending soil and at 45 days after sowing in soil amended with ground mesocarp fiber of oil palm after oil extraction at the rate of 10 g/kg soil. Ground mesocarp fiber of oil palm after oil extraction has potential for use as an agricultural waste for the control of S. rolfsii but this requires further evaluation in the field.
