Transgressive variability in cotton hybrids

The aim of the study was to define the degree and fregquence of transgressions by the most important economic characters in F2 hybrids, obtained after dialled crosses of cotton cultivars and bred lines. Some of the lines included germplasm of the G. barbadense L. species in their genotype. The degree and frequence of transgressions were determined by the methods of Voskresenskaya and Shpota (1967). It was found that transgressive variability by all traits arose in separate hybrid combinations to a higher degree for the number of bolls and seed cotton weight per plant. The frequency of transgressions for all studied traits was approximately the same - 3,3-13,3% or 3,3-16,7%. Transgressive variability in fibre length was observed mainly in hybrid combinations where one of the parents had alien germplasm from the G. barbadense L. species.
