In response to agricultural specialisation and intensification, an experimentation has been initiated in 1963 to measure long term impact of fertilisation without cattle manure on crop yields, soil fertility and organic matter level. Main treatments of this trial are: EMS = Mineral fertilisers only, EMR + Ré = Adapted mineral fertilisers + restitution of crop residues, EMR + Fu = Adapted mineral fertilisers + cattle manure. Two nitrogen fertilisation levels have been introduced since 1972 as sub-treatments. During 41 years none of the PK fertilisation system did significantly influence crop yields. This statement validates the full taking of the P and K content of crop residues and farm manure into account as plant nutrients like fertilisers. Soil organic matter content shows following decreasing tendency: cattle manure - crop residues - mineral fertilisers only. The fertiliser balance reveals that excess or deficit of P2O5 were inferior to 30 kg/ha/year and that of K2O below 50 kg/ha/year. The evolution of soil fertility level is not systematically parallel to the evolution of the P2O5 and K2O balance.
