Curriculum evaluation and professional situation of forest engineers in Switzerland: Results of a survey at ETH alumni of classes 1993-2001

The work describes a survey of forest engineers, carried out in 2003, who graduated from ETH Zurich between 1993 and 2001. A questionnaire was used to ascertain their vocational situation, their further education and training, their retrospective evaluation of the forest science curriculum, and its further development. The majority of alumni gave a positive evaluation of their current vocational situation, as well as the courses of forest science that they had studied. For 62% of those surveyed, their degree in forest science was a prerequisite to obtaining their current place of employment. Professional experience, and further training were also important assets in terms of career. The most important sectors of activity are public administration (28%), private engineers offices (26%), research and the supply of (non-forestry) services (15% each). Compared with earlier surveys, the trend towards more occupations outside the forestry sector has increased slightly, as has that towards the interdisciplinarity of the occupations within the forest sector. General skills and qualifications that are not restricted to forestry therefore have gained significance. With respect to the planned ETH MSc program «Forest and Landscape Management», which will replace the present diploma course of Forest Sciences, a majority of those surveyed (43%) would prefer enhanced options for individual choices regarding their own qualification profile, 33% an obligatory broad and balanced orientation of the curriculum and 15% a focus on natural sciences.
