Quality of water supply systems [Serbia and Montenegro]

The paper presents ways of composing the content of water at the sources and its changes in the water supply system. The changes may take place at the source, in treatment plants, in distribution system and storage tanks. Taking into account that ingredients of water may, sometimes, have detrimental effect on health of people as well as production processes in some industries, and on water supply structures and equipment, it is necessary to take care of water composition. From that reason the national authorities and international organizations set requirements concerning the water quality, especially for population health protection. Further on, in the paper the directive of European Community concerning quality of water intended for human consumption, and Yugoslav Regulations for hygienic quality of drinking water are presented. They are compared concerning the concentrations recommended, as well as required procedure for quality check. Guideline of World Health Organization, Part 2 dealing with health criteria for definition of permited water constituents concentrations, is utilized in the paper to deal with some ingradients that provoked public interest last years in the country. At the end, the treatment plant 'Makis' of the Begrade water works is presented, as an example of a contemporary system for production of water complying with regulations.
