Zearalenone - negative risk factor for human and animal health
2004
Terzic, V.
Zearalenone belongs to the phytoestrogen group and it is a secondary metabolite of Fusarium moulds. The estrogen substances cause a premature sexual development in immature females, while in males they inhibit a normal testis development. The clinical effects caused by zearalenone vary depending on the animal species, age and environmental conditions. On the basis of the obtained laboratory results from the analyses of 185 samples of corn, 23 samples of wheat, 72 samples of barley, 21 samples of sunflower pellets and 59 samples of soybeans the concentration range of zearalenone from minimal 0.8 to maximal 200 ppm registered values was established.
